23rd-Jul-2008 11:34 am - Sudan: We Ignore ICC Like U.S.
After Sudan President Omar al-Bashir was charged with three counts of genocide by the International Criminal Court, the country is using the U.S. to justify its rejection of the courty's authority.
23rd-Jul-2008 11:05 am - Samuelson: A Depression? Hardly
Robert J. Samuelson: The specter of depression stalks America. You hear the word repeatedly. Are we in a depression? If not, are we headed for one? The answer to the first question is no; the answer to the second is "almost certainly not." The use of "depression" to describe the economy is a case of rhetorical overkill that speaks volumes about today's widespread pessimism and anxiety.

23rd-Jul-2008 08:18 am - Smuggling Drugs
I had weird dreams last night that I was trying to smuggle drugs, and I was being chased mercilessly. I think they were inspired by this movie I saw last week, "Brick." It ended with Barbies having sex (huh??), so that's at least something.

More working on websites today. At least, for the morning.

I am listless. Officially.
23rd-Jul-2008 09:04 am - Video: Obama Cheered by US Forces in Baghdad
Barack Obama met with a crowd of cheering troops and State Department workers in Baghdad Monday night. "I don't care whether you are a Sailor, a Soldier, an Airmen, or Marine. A National Guard, a Reservist, active duty," he told them, "we just want to say thank you."
23rd-Jul-2008 08:37 am - CBS Edits Out McCain Surge Gaffe
During an interview with Katie Couric, John McCain made the false claim that the surge in Iraq "began the Anbar awakening." But in a puzzling move, CBS did not actually televise McCains false claim tonight. As MSNBC's Keith Olbermann reported, CBS left it on the edit room floor -- airing Couric's question followed by part of McCain's answer to another question instead.
23rd-Jul-2008 09:26 am - Thousands of Criminals Originated Loans in Florida
More than half the 120,563 mortgage professionals registered in Florida entered the industry this decade without being licensed by the state, The Miami Herald found. More than 5,000 people with criminal histories became loan originators -- a rate of nearly two a day.
23rd-Jul-2008 07:47 am - Modding the Oppo 980 for better audio output

There's an interesting thread discussing mods to improve the inexpensive Oppo 980 DVD player for better performance. The power supply, capacitors and opamps can benefit from some higher end components. [Occam] suggests several replacement opamps options for upgrading the audio output. The realatively low cost of Oppo gear makes it a better risk than modding a multi-thousand dollar DVD player.

23rd-Jul-2008 07:36 am - Cuban Missile Crisis All over Again

23rd-Jul-2008 12:08 am - Community Lockdown
Just a reminder to everyone that as of Midnight PST tonight (about 20 minutes ago), this community is officially in lockdown. Mods will not be checking the posting queue until at least July 26th after [info]frey_at_last and I have seen the movie, and at that point we will come out with our post-movie game plan. Mods will continue to check the members queue (we are 11 people away from 3000!) and we will be posting as many interviews, articles and pieces of news we can find.

Happy movie weekend everyone! Have a great time and enjoy every moment of it!
22nd-Jul-2008 11:16 pm - XF Poster for sale
Managed to walk away with two XF posters at the LA Film Fest, so I have an extra to sell. This one is signed by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz, great condition. Buyer pays actual shipping costs, I won't over inflate the cost for extra cash. To be honest, I don't know what to charge for it. I don't want to ask for too little, or anything outrageously obscene, so the ball's in your court. If you comment with the price you're willing to pay plus your sob story/bribes/fanfic offers/sacrifice of firstborn child, I'll pick a lucky someone.

22nd-Jul-2008 09:45 pm - Today
Although I didn't have a gig today, it was a rather busy day. I am working on revamping redhotannie.com - and I'm also working a project for a friend's website. We're trading services, actually - I get lessons from her, she gets a website. It's quite AWESOME.

Aside from that, I'm trying to drum up a little more makeup business. I'm *SO* slow this week - same as last week. I have a quick job tomorrow, but aside from that, it's DEAD. Blah.

22nd-Jul-2008 07:39 pm - USA Today articles + picture
This USA Today journalist has a unique conversation with David and Gillian at the Museum of Jurassic Technology.

(bigger picture at link)

'X-Files' stars hope fans still believe

It's the Museum of Jurassic Technology, a shadowy building in an otherwise banal business district, where the peculiar, unlikely and doubtful are showcased with sincerity and reverence.

Duchovny stands before a glass case where a quintet of small dishes of silvery powder sits on a revolving tray. A plaque identifies them as 1.) Possession, 2.) Delusion, 3.) Paranoia, 4.) Schizophrenia and 5.) Reason.

"This is the actual manifestation of those things," Duchovny says with amused matter-of-factness.

There's also an article on X-Files fans: The Mulder-Scully fans are out there

Very minor spoilers only in the movie summary. If you're trying to stay unspoiled, just skip ahead when you realize they're starting to sum up the movie. :)

Former Bosnian Serb president Radovan Karadzic has been arrested after more than a decade in hiding. Karadzic, 63, is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war during the 1992-1995 war that followed Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia.
